What is an XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the URLs on your website along with optional metadata (last modified date, change frequency, priority). It acts as a roadmap for search engine crawlers, helping them discover and index all your important pages — especially those that might not be easily found through internal links.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-01-15</lastmod>
    <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
    <priority>1.0</priority>
  </url>
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/about</loc>
    <lastmod>2025-11-01</lastmod>
    <changefreq>monthly</changefreq>
    <priority>0.8</priority>
  </url>
</urlset>

Why Sitemaps Matter for SEO

  • New websites — Google may take weeks to crawl a new site. Submitting a sitemap via Search Console speeds up indexing.
  • Large websites — a site with thousands of pages may not have all URLs in the crawl budget. Sitemaps ensure nothing is missed.
  • Isolated pages — pages with no internal links (orphan pages) are otherwise invisible to crawlers.
  • Rich media — separate sitemap types exist for images (image:image), videos, and news articles.

How to Submit Your Sitemap to Google

  1. Upload your sitemap.xml to your website root: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
  2. Add a Sitemap: directive to your robots.txt file.
  3. Go to Google Search Console → Sitemaps → enter the sitemap URL → Submit.
  4. Repeat for Bing Webmaster Tools if you want coverage there too.
