Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?
Drop one or more .heic or .heif photos into the tool, choose JPG (or PNG) and a quality level, then click Convert. Download each picture individually or all of them at once as a ZIP file.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser, so your photos are converted on your own device and never uploaded or stored. Only the decoder code itself is downloaded from this site the first time you convert.
Can I get JPG photos from my iPhone without a converter?
Yes. On iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible to shoot JPG from now on, and AirDrop or email usually converts automatically. On a Mac, open the photo in Preview and use File → Export → JPEG, or export from the Photos app.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, so every conversion re-compresses the image. At 90% quality the difference is invisible for normal viewing, but the JPG is usually 1.5–2× larger than the HEIC. Choose PNG if you need a lossless copy for editing.
Why does my browser not open HEIC files?
Most browsers cannot decode HEIC because the HEVC codec it relies on is patent-encumbered. Safari on macOS and iOS can display HEIC natively, but Chrome, Firefox and Edge on Windows usually cannot, which is why converting to JPG is the easiest way to share them.
Is location data (EXIF) kept in the converted JPG?
No. The JPG is created from the decoded pixels, so GPS coordinates, camera model and other EXIF fields are not copied. That is useful for privacy, but keep the original HEIC if you need the date and location for your photo library.
What Is a HEIC File?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's name for the HEIF image format, which iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. Instead of the decades-old JPEG compression, HEIF stores pictures with the HEVC (H.265) video codec, applied to a single frame. The result is a photo that looks the same as a JPG at roughly half the file size, which is why your phone can hold twice as many pictures.
HEIF is also a container, not just a codec. One .heic file can hold several images (burst shots, image sequences), a depth map for Portrait mode, an alpha channel and 10-bit colour. That flexibility is great for the camera, but it is also why so much software still cannot open these files.
HEIC vs JPG: Which Should You Use?
| Feature | HEIC / HEIF | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| File size (same quality) | ≈ 50% smaller | Baseline |
| Colour depth | Up to 10-bit | 8-bit |
| Multiple images per file | Yes | No |
| Opens in Windows / Chrome | Often not | Everywhere |
| Accepted by web forms | Rarely | Almost always |
Keep HEIC for storage on Apple devices and convert to JPG whenever you share outside that ecosystem: uploading to a job portal, attaching to an email for a Windows user, printing at a photo kiosk or adding pictures to a website. JPG is supported by every browser, operating system and online form.
How This Converter Works
Each file is first checked by its header: a real HEIF file starts with an ftyp box whose brand is heic, heix, mif1 or similar, so renamed files are rejected. The photo is then decoded by a JavaScript build of libheif running inside your browser and re-encoded as JPG or PNG. Files are processed one at a time to keep memory usage low on phones. If a HEIC contains several images, only the first (the main photo) is converted and the tool tells you so.
Tips
- Quality 85–92% gives the best balance between file size and fidelity for photos.
- Need a smaller file? Convert first, then shrink it to an exact size for upload forms.
- Large batches work, but phones have limited memory — convert 20–30 photos at a time.
- Keep your originals: converting strips EXIF data, including the capture date.
Opening HEIC on Windows, Android and the Web
Windows 10 and 11 can show HEIC thumbnails only after installing the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store, and the HEVC one is not always free. Recent Android phones read HEIC in their gallery app, but many messaging apps, older photo editors and almost every website upload form still expect JPG or PNG. Chrome, Edge and Firefox generally refuse to display HEIC, while Safari on macOS and iOS decodes it natively. Converting once to JPG is usually quicker than installing codecs on every computer you use, and the result works anywhere — including email clients, office documents, printing services and CMS media libraries.
