Frequently Asked Questions
How do I sign a PDF online for free?
Open your PDF, create a signature by drawing it, typing your name or uploading an image, then drag it onto the page and resize it. Click Apply and the signed PDF is downloaded to your device.
Is my PDF uploaded to your servers?
No. The PDF and your signature are processed by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged, so contracts and personal documents never leave your computer.
Is this a legally binding digital signature?
This tool adds a visual electronic signature: an image of your signature placed on the page. It is not a certificate-based digital signature (PAdES/PKI) and does not cryptographically seal the file. Many everyday agreements accept electronic signatures, but check what your recipient or local law requires.
Can I sign several pages of the same PDF?
Yes. Place the signature on any page, add it to other pages one by one, or copy the selected signature to every page in one click — handy for initialling each page of a contract.
Can I add the date next to my signature?
Yes. Click Add date to place an editable date stamp on the page. Choose the date format, then drag and resize it like the signature.
Will signing change the rest of my PDF?
No. The original pages are kept as they are; the signature is drawn on top as an image. Text stays selectable and the file is saved as a new copy named after the original with a -signed suffix.
How this PDF signer works
When you open a document, the page is rendered with Mozilla's pdf.js so you can see exactly where the signature will land. Your signature is turned into a transparent PNG image and, when you click apply, the open-source pdf-lib library embeds that image once and draws it on every page where you placed it. The rest of the file — text, fonts, links and images — is copied untouched, so the signed PDF looks and behaves like the original.
Positions are converted from screen pixels to PDF points while taking the page's crop box and its /Rotate setting into account. That is why the signature ends up upright and in the right spot even on scanned pages that are stored sideways.
Nothing is sent anywhere: the document and your signature exist only in this browser tab and disappear when you close it.
How to sign a PDF step by step
- Open the PDF. Drop it onto the page or click to browse.
- Create your signature. Draw it on the pad, type your name and pick a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature on white paper.
- Place it. Go to the right page, click Add signature, then drag the box into position and pull the corner handle to resize it. Arrow keys nudge the selected item.
- Add the date (optional). Insert a date stamp and edit its format or text.
- Apply and download. The result is saved as
name-signed.pdf.
Electronic signature vs. digital signature
The two terms are often confused. An electronic signature is any electronic mark that shows intent to sign — a typed name, a scanned signature or a drawn one, like the result of this tool. Laws such as the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation recognise simple electronic signatures for many everyday documents: NDAs, rental forms, permission slips or purchase orders.
A digital signature is something different: a cryptographic seal created with a certificate issued to you. It proves who signed and detects any later change to the file. This tool does not create that kind of signature. If a bank, court or public body asks for a qualified or certificate-based signature, use the software they specify.
Tips for a clean signature
- For uploads, photograph your signature in dark ink on plain white paper; the tool can remove the white background for you.
- Draw slowly and large — the signature is scaled down on the page, which hides small tremors.
- Blue ink makes it easy to tell a signed original from a black-and-white photocopy.
- Signing many documents? Save a reusable PNG with the signature generator and upload it each time.
- Sign the final version only: editing a PDF after signing makes it unclear what was agreed.
